A work in progress

An evolving garden and courtyard spacePeople enjoying the Courtyard

The Memorial Courtyard is located in the courtyard of the Fine Arts building. We have renovated this courtyard space, with the northwest end being dedicated to the Memorial Garden. The project will be completed in phases as resources become available:

In Remembrance: The memorial to the alumni victims of the World Trade Center was completed in October of 2002. Funds to make the memorial possible were donated by the campus community and friends, including $8,000 raised by the graduating class of 2004. This first phase of the transformation of the Courtyard included creating the 9/11 Memorial, planting sod to replace the concrete planting a tulip bed, building the first arbor and plantings.

Enhancements continue: Additional gifts have provided necessary funds for the installation of bluestone, installing lighting, installing an irrigation system to preserve the greenspace, creating a perennial garden, adding a second arbor, adding benches, installing the memorial boulder, and creating a recognition display. The Class of 2003 donated the second arbor, and Class of 2004 donated lighting, and the Graduate Student Organization donated the recognition display, continuing a tradition of student giving to the Courtyard transformation.

Future Expansions Plans: Future plans for the Courtyard include renovation of upper courtyard with bluestone, sod, and lighting to extend the design of the lower Courtyard and adding additional benches and trees to expand the beauty and utility of this special space.
